Wreaths Across America 2011

About 60 people turned out on a cold but sunny Saturday, Dec. 10 to place wreaths on all 319 headstones at the cemetery.

Veterans Day 2011

KVCN, Williamstown:  KVCN's Veterans Day ceremony took place at 11 a.m. Eastern on Friday, Nov. 11. Grant County High School Junior ROTC Color Guard posted the colors. Guest Speaker was LTC (USAR) James G. Simpson. Howard Chipman, veteran of two tours in Vietnam, gave the Invocation and Benediction. Daughters of the American Revolution sponsored the wreath-laying ceremony, and Williamstown Women's Clubs provided refreshments.

KDVA's sincere thanks to Mike and Dennis Stanley from Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home in Williamstown Ky for their generous donation of this bench. It graces the  the Committal Shelter for families and loved ones to use while visiting KVCN. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Memorial Day / Carillon Tower Dedication

Will be held on Monday 30 May 2011, at 1:00pm. Grant County Veterans Honor Guard will present & retire colors and AMVETS Department of KY will place wreaths.  The guest speakers will be Governor Steve Beshear of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and President William A. Boettcher of the AMVETS National Service Foundation. Refreshments will be served by Williamstown Woman's Club.

On Monday, March 22, KVCN honored Dennis Glacken, a longtime supporter of and volunteer for Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North. KDVA Commissioner Ken Lucas, KVCN Director Al Duncan, KVCN's staff and Mrs. Glacken attended the presentation.

 

 

 

 

 

Blue Star Mothers Memorial Marker

On November 11, 2009, Blue Star Mothers of America Inc., Northern Kentucky Chapter 5, formally dedicated the memorial stone they placed at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North in August.

The 1,900-pound granite marker is KVCN's first memorial marker.  The inscription reads:

"Dedicated in memory of those who gave all their tomorrows so that we could have our freedom today."

Kentucky's Third and Newest State Veterans Cemetery

KDVA began construction on Kentucky Veterans Cemetery - North in Williamstown (Grant County) in March 2007, and opened in August 2008.  As of June 30, 2011, KVCN has interred 383 veterans and dependents, including four active-duty service members.

Description

Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North is located on 99 acres off I-75 at mile marker one hundred fifty-four (154) in Williamstown. Phase One construction includes a 3,600-square-foot administration building, a 4,400-square-foot maintenance building with service area, committal facility and a columbarium. It also has appropriate parking, road network, walking path and landscaping commensurate with the dignity and honor of a state veterans cemetery.

Construction and initial equipment for KVCN cost $8.2 million. The Grant County Industrial Authority donated the land. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reimbursed the state for construction, and the state pays the operating costs.

Qualifications and Services

Qualifications

Burial in a state veteran's cemetery is based on military service. The eligibility criteria is the same criteria for burial in VA national cemeteries. KDVA staff will direct requests for interment to staff at the cemetery where burial is sought.

Services

Total interment services include:

  • Furnishing grave or columbarium space
  • Opening and closing the grave
  • Providing the interment site with perpetual care
  • Supplying a suitable marker or headstone
  • Furnishing an optional concrete grave liner for all casketed burials

NOTE on markers and headstones:  Although the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers flat marble or bronze markers in addition to upright bronze and marble headstones, KDVA permits only upright marble headstones and marble columbarium niche markers at our state cemeteries.
